We announced recently that TechBridge Solutions has become a new reseller for CADSTAR in North America. I was curious about the company and they type of markets they operate in, so I caught up with CEO, Dave Castine.
Give us a picture of TechBridge and its people
TechBridge is a small company, but we’ve recently expanded our sales force signing experienced EDA software specialists Alicia McIntire and Tim Mitchell, who will be covering the west and east coasts respectively. Our sales partner Jean Godbout at EDA Force, in Montreal, represents Canada and the French-speaking province of Quebec. Jean’s a 20-year veteran of the EDA industry. We also have four PCB designers and one librarian. Being small, we’ve attracted new customers over the years because we are dedicated to our customers, can be very flexible, and we have low overheads.
What’s your background?

I’ve worked in the EDA industry for nearly 30 years. I had experience of PCB Design, customer support and EDA sales before I decided to set up TechBridge.
How does CADSTAR fit with your company?
We have developed our reputation as a design service company, so now offering CADSTAR allows us to become a one-stop-shop for both design and sales. This means we can assist with conversion services and product training.

Tell us a little about where you’re based in Massachusetts, USA, and the local marketplace.
We’re very close to Zuken’s North America headquarters in Westford. My most active customer base is in defense and medical as these industries are well represented in New England, and we offer design support for many defense customers. The medical industry is driven by the large drug and chemical industries in the Massachusetts area, so a market has grown up naturally to support and integrate with those industries.
What gets your customers excited?
CADSTAR Board Modeler Lite is attractive to many people because of the opportunities it offers. Zuken has an edge over other comparable software with CADSTAR’s 3D capabilities, and when I show people what it can do it really seems to capture their imagination. We’re also getting feedback that Constraint Browser – in combination with Topology Editor in CADSTAR, for high speed design – is very good value for money compared with other software.
What is it about the functional aspects of viewing in 3D that offers an edge over traditional tools?
With true 3D representations of parts and heights, it’s easy to see the board you’ve designed and work out whether there are any problems with the physical configuration. For example, you may be looking for collision avoidance with cases and racks in a system. You can take the mechanical information of a project, its casing and other aspects, import it into CADSTAR Board Modeler Lite and the details are clear. It’s a more automated process, which means fewer design iterations and reduced design time. We have one customer who makes audio equipment and when he tested his design in Board Modeler Lite he realized immediately that the CD door was hitting a capacitor on the board. Previously, they would have had to wait until the prototype stage to find this out – so they ended up saving a lot of time and money.
What is your sales territory?
We look forward to meeting companies across Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana; plus Montreal, and Western Canada.
