When Quadra Solutions was recently named European CADSTAR Distributor of the Year for 2011-12, Zuken asked me why I thought we’d achieved this success.
It’s a question I had to think long and hard about (partly because it’s unusual being asked to blow your own trumpet!), but it became clear that our results are down to a host of ingredients that didn’t just gel over a single year.
Flexible packages
CADSTAR has been a popular PCB design tool since the early days of CAD, and the staff at Quadra have witnessed most of this life cycle. It is a known product with a good reputation. But the main reason we’ve done well is that CADSTAR is very good at what it does.

When we analyzed our sales we saw that we have had equally strong uptake across all the CADSTAR variants. The recent introduction of CADSTAR Lite has proved tempting to many new users who were looking to step up the functionality of their PCB design tool, as well as being the perfect choice for companies just starting out with in-house PCB design.
At the other end of the spectrum, the capabilities we offer for high-speed, high-end technology have proved popular with new and existing users alike. Leading 3D tools, the best constraint-driven routers available, and cost-saving simulation and analysis software such as SI Verify, ensure we have a lot to get potential new users excited about.
Lessons from former Apple CEO, Steve Jobs
Steve Jobs once said: “I think we’re having fun. I think our customers really like our products. And we’re always trying to do better.”
Now I’m not saying people get the same levels of pleasure when they get their CADSTAR dongle delivered as when the latest iPad is released. But it’s the same principal, and I do think these observations apply to the teams at Quadra and Zuken.
The first sentence is important; but the next two are key: Our customers do like what we do and what Zuken deliver in CADSTAR. Year on year, the tools and functionality are improved and kept at the forefront of the market. This is clearly demonstrated by this year’s release of the new Power Integrity Advance tool. While there may be other tools that can carry out the same analysis and simulation, Zuken’s Power Integrity Advance is leading-edge technology at an affordable price. It’s what our customers want, and it’s what Zuken delivers – which is a large contributor to Quadra’s success.
Having said that, we are a good team that know our products and understand what people designing PCBs want. With hard work, enthusiasm and a good product, you get good results.
